The Parish Youth Choir
The Parish Youth Choir(PYC) was formed some eight years ago to give girls in the parish the opportunity to participate more fully in the musical worship of our two churches.
We sing once a month from September to July, usually at St. Mary’s Quarry Street. We normally sing at 11.15 on the third Sunday of the month with a rehearsal on the previous morning.
Our repertoire is varied. Whilst not discarding the traditional, we do also explore more modern music and have recently been very honoured to have a service setting specially composed for us by Will Todd.
The age range of the choir is from 6 years upwards. One of the most striking things about the choir is the way in which the older girls care for the younger ones. There is, in fact a real “family” atmosphere.
We begin each season with a barbecue to which parents and siblings are invited and at Christmas , we have a carol singing event when we collect for a local charity and then have a party!
A number of the girls are proficient instrumentalists at various levels. We try to give them the opportunity to play in the services occasionally and this is very popular with the girls and the congregation.
At present we have 19 girls on our register. We are happy to welcome newcomers and can assure you that we are a very friendly group who really enjoy music making.
